Candy Stores.......There were many in our neighborhood in the '40's & '50's, but the one of choice was Benny Levine's, on 42nd & 7th Av. Those that remember Benny's could write at least a page or two, about hanging out there and the nonsensical pranks that were played on this intelligent, humorous and forgiving man .
Sunset Park....................the old neighborhood . Enduring limestones . Wooden framed houses with fancy molding and millwork. Store fronts with character. Mom and pop bakeries . Bill's and Meyer's ice cream parlors, Mippo's, John's and Engel's delicatessens, Guella's fruit and vegetable store, Thoreson's Dry Cleaners & Tailors, Matty's and Muscarella's barber shops, Joe the Ice Man [he delivered ice], Murray's, Kissen's and Joseph's drug stores, [we got our medicine there] Fiole's Pizzeria, Ralston's, Einhorn's, the Finnish Food Co-op and penny candy stores
40th Street and 4th Avenue

The Imatra Society was a Finnish American Social Club founded in 1890 . It provided mutual aid for members, and sponsored social and cultural activities, dances, plays , lectures, concerts, and picnics . The hall housed a theater, gym, restaurant, pool hall, reading room, and sauna . Subgroups included a band, choral and theatrical group and folk dancing . The activities ended in 1961. Many of us had good times there during the 1940's and 50's .
Finn Hall was a rough place with a guaranteed fight every Saturday night . As you can see it is now a Hispanic Religious organization . Many of the buildings on this block have the original siding still protecting them from the elements . The ground store in front of the white van was where my Mom worked as a seamstress. When I was about 8 or 9 years old the owner Mr. Solo. gave me a dollar every Saturday. I swept the floors and oiled the sewing machines
